"Apparently the reason was that embezzlement scandal. Bruce all but groveled before me to apologize for the missed dinner. He looked terrible as if he hadn't slept at all."
Ra's leaned back and considered the protectiveness in his daughter's voice with a smile. It seemed that true feelings were developing. His smile widened as his thoughts returned to the last night.
Talia narrowed her eyes. "Father, what did you do to him?"
"I? Nothing. I applaud his firm stance against corruption." He approved of that relationship but Talia would have just to learn that he had the older rights.

It was deeply satisfying to have Bruce at his side again. Even more so to watch him while he woke, relaxed and hair mussed from sleep. This was as it should be.
"But you are dead," Bruce wondered aloud. "Am I dead too?"
Ducard sighed. The doctor had warned him about the painkiller's possible side effects. "Is it important?" He asked mildly.
While Bruce pondered this problem Ducard rolled him over and pinned him down, careful of that just treated bullet wound. No matter, Ducard mused. Good Samaritan work deserves a reward. And such opportunities could not be wasted.

It was way beyond humiliating that Batman had to get involved to investigate Wayne Enterprises. But an internal check had found nothing damning except that the books of this particular subsidiary had looked too perfect to Bruce Wayne and his CEO. Their suspicions had proved to be justified.
Batman had just snapped the last photo and pocketed the samples when angry shouts announced that he was discovered. He was already off the grounds when one of the wildly fired shots hit him in the back. Armor-piercing, he realized. Unexpectedly, the night birthed shadows who caught him as he fell.
